Our weekly series of advertising at the top universities in each conference focuses this week’s blog on The Big Ten Conference. Despite its name, the conference includes 14 universities with the largest being, Ohio State with over 61-thousand students and the smallest, Northwestern University with nearly 22-thousand students. Below we analyze the top 5 Big Ten schools, based on the 2021 best college rankings list.
Top 5 Big Ten Schools
- Northwestern University (NWU)
- University of Michigan (UM)
- University of Wisconsin (UW)
- University of Illinois (UI)
- Ohio State University (OSU)
At the #9 spot in Best College Ranking, Northwestern is a private university that sits near the shore of Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. Known for its journalism graduate program, the school also has one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the country, Dance Marathon.
At Northwestern, 60% of students live in campus housing (dorms and apartments), which is unusually high for any large university. Knowing this, one of the impactful media strategies to reach these students efficiently is distributing customized door hangers to the student dorms and apartments. Door hangers are 2-sided, full color and can include QR codes, gift cards or magnets and are easily placed on the outside of each door by a team of brand ambassadors.
University of Michigan
Founded in 1817, UM is a public institution located just 45 minutes from Detroit. Their most popular majors are Computer Science, Business Administration, Economics, and Psychology.
More than 31-thousand students make up this university’s diverse enrollment boasting 62 Greek Chapters and 15-hundred student organizations! Housing is offered, but not mandatory like some schools. For this school, we recommend the largest form of campus media, kiosks (36 of them) to brand your message to a large group of students. In addition to the kiosk, we also recommend utilizing our Brand Ambassadors to do presentations for your brand at Greek chapter meetings and club meetings.
University of Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin has just over 33-thousand students, 900 student clubs, and a robust Greek life. The school is located in Madison which is one of the nicer college towns in the Midwest hosting a festive night live culture of restaurants and bars. Because of this, most students choose to live off-campus so marketing to them has its own challenges.
The traditional forms of campus-based media can still be effective as they attend classes, meals, and athletics, however, digital strategies reach students in their off-campus apartments & houses. Through a three-pronged digital approach utilizing 1st party student email and data, brands can reach student’s inboxes, on their desktop & mobile devices, and while they stream their favorite shows on connected TV. Additionally, deploying a Student Social Influencer (SSI) campaign further reaches these Badgers on their personal social platforms. This 360 ̊ digital approach touches all components of their online life even if they hardly ever step foot on campus.
University of Illinois
UI has nearly 34-thousand undergraduates who participate in 16-hundred student clubs and boast the largest Greek life membership outside of Athens, Greece (haha). With 90 Fraternity & Sorority Chapter Houses whose members tend to be more “social” and have greater disposable income than the average student, the opportunity for Chapter House sponsorship is enormous.
Student Brand Ambassadors (BA’s) provide access to the monthly Chapter meetings where they will give an overview presentation/demonstration of a product or service, provide giveaways to the members, and collect necessary information for possible follow-up initiatives. Combine in a Social Influencer activation will extend the engagement virtually with pictures of the event and promoted posts across members’ social platforms. These types of peer-to-peer activations rate as one of the best ways to engage students directly with your product or service.
Ohio State University
OSU is not only the largest school in the Big 10, it has one of the largest student enrollments in the country with nearly 47-thousand undergrads & 14K graduates. Despite its size, nearly 1/3 of all the classes have fewer than 20 students, that’s impressive! The campus is nestled in the center of Columbus which is located in the center of Ohio. If you are a high schooler in OH, you want to be a Buckeye!
OSU’s campus being centrally located in Columbus has multiple campus out-of-home options to reach students where they live, study, work, and play. These large format displays reach students on the campus transit buses, while students are having a meal on High Street (street furniture/ billboards) or in and around the university’s buildings on kiosks or bike panels. This diverse campus OOH network is the most robust student branding opportunity across the country at one of the largest US universities. Any new product or service launch should start at OSU!
