When marketing to college students, it is important to engage with them on their own turf. By engaging with them on their favorite platforms, your brand will be able to communicate with a larger amount of your target market on a deeper level. According to a survey we conducted at OnCampus Advertising, the preferred media formats of college students are social media and Internet music.

Almost 77% and 58% of students spend over 2 hours a week on these platforms. About 17% of students spend over 10 hours a week on social media, and 20% spend more than 10 hours a week on Internet radio sites. No other media platforms reached that level of engagement. The formats mentioned included:

  • Social media
  • National newspapers
  • Print magazines
  • Live TV
  • Netflix/Hulu/other streaming platforms
  • Broadcast Radio
  • Internet Radio (Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio)

Fifty-five percent of students said they spend less than an hour a week on the above media formats except for social media and Internet radio. The least popular media format was broadcast radio, with 72% of students spending less than an hour a week tuning in. Below are the full results of the survey:
