Studies have shown that about 3/4 of college students have read their school’s newspaper in the past month. At schools where the newspaper is printed daily, this percentage jumps to 92%. Being that the total enrollment of schools who publish their newspapers daily could be anywhere from 20,000-40,000 students, this is a significant reach. In spite of this, advertising in college newspapers remains the most cost effective form of print advertising.
In addition, college students are often very trusting of the advertisements that they see displayed in their school newspaper. The students figure that if the advertisements are approved by the school, they must be legitimate and worth their time. This student mindset allows companies to effectively target this valuable and ever growing market. College students have enormous buying power (about $306 billion in 2013-2014: a 13% increase from the previous year) and if brands are able to get their attention, they have the possibility of creating loyal customers for decades to come.
