The Class of 2019 Freshmen in Review

 Students off to their freshman year of college are on average 18 years old and born in 1997. Here are some interesting and fun facts about this group of millennials from Beloit College.

  1. Those who have never been alive in their lifetimes include the Notorious B.I.G., Princess Diana and Mother Teresa.
  2. Google has always been around to “organize the world’s information and make it universally acceptable.”
  3. They have never licked a postage stamp.
  4. Email is their “formal” form of communication – while texts and tweets are casual.
  5. They treat Wi-Fi is an entitlement.
  6. Cell phones are guaranteed to make an appearance during class time that teachers are unsure which students are taking notes and which ones are texting their friends.
  7. Phish Food has always been an available flavor from Ben and Jerry’s.
  8. Their parents have gone from encouraging them to use the Internet to begging them to get off of it.
  9. When they were born, cell phone data usage was so expensive, their parents only used them for emergencies.
  10. The Lion King has always been on Broadway.
  11. High definition TV always has been available to see their favorite athletes and actors.
  12. The Atlanta Braves have always played on Turner Field.
  13. Their first steps were recorded on camcorders.
  14. The use of medical marijuana has always been legal in a growing number of states in the U.S.
  15. Phoenix Lights is a series about UFO sightings, and not filtered cigarettes.
  16. Amoco gas stations have disappeared from American highways.
  17. They grew up around Playhouse Disney.
  18. They followed the adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermoine through all seven books.
  19. Color photos have always been on the front page of The New York Times.
  20. The NCAA always determined a national champion in college football.
  21. Hybrid cars were mass-produced.
  22. They are unimpressed by the announcement of a “first woman” to hold a certain position.
