Student Newspapers Are Still A Widely Popular Advertising Medium

College newspaper readership is still a largely popular advertising medium, according to a study we conducted here at OnCampus Advertising. Over half (53%) of respondents at 25 major US universities said they had read their college newspaper in the last 7 days. In April and May of 2016, we conducted an online media consumption survey at 25 large US universities. By running an online advertising campaign on 25 college newspaper websites, students and faculty could click on a banner ad leading them to the survey. The survey obtained 309 responses, 141 from college students, 77 from alumni and 25 to 35 from each of faculty, alumni, parents and others.

Here is the breakdown of when the respondents last read their college newspaper:

64% have read their college newspaper in the past two weeks, with only 10% saying they never read an issue. Therefore, this demonstrates that college students today are still invested in print newspapers.

Specifically with print editions, OCA asked respondents how many of the last five editions of their newspaper they have read. One-third (33%) said they read all of the last five issues. Students also spend a good amount of time reading the print editions of their college newspapers, as 86% spend over five minutes reading each issue. Additionally, almost 28% said they spend more than fifteen minutes on each issue. Why do students spend so much time reading their newspapers? The main reason is due to the fact that it provides a source of accurate campus news, opinion pieces on different campus topics, and information about sports, art and entertainment.
