“Where did all my money go?” – a common question most college students ask themselves at least once during their time spent at university. Nationwide gathered data to see where college students were spending the most money in, and found that 40% of the money students have or make goes to what they want to spend their money on.And what do college students want to spend their money on? Clothes, the latest technology, travel, and other businesses hold the highest priorities when it comes to spending money. Westwood Collegecomputed a study to measure how these different categories stack up against each other.
How are they earning this money?
According to Nationwide, three out of four college students have a job during school. Among the most popular jobs are resident assistants, babysitters, waiter/waitress/bartender, and tutor. Their average income per month is only $1,200 but it adds up to a cumulative $417 billion in spending power. However, of the students that work, fifty percent work part-time to balance their studies with jobs.
How are they spending their money?
Most students own at least one credit or debit card, but they usually use it for education related costs, such as textbooks and school supplies. According to The College Board, the average cost for books and supplies for 2014 was a little bit over $1,200. Almost a quarter of undergraduates have a credit card balance between $3,000 and $7,000, which suggests they charge money on more than just school related items on credit cards.
